The Pendulum Squat is specifically designed to replicate squats but with a greater emphasis on the quads, and facilitating a full range of motion. A relatively new design amongst commercial machines, once you try it we're convinced you'll be sold right away.
To grow muscle, it's important to move through a full range of motion, and ideally achieve a stretch at the end position. Think of a bench press, and lowering the bar to your chest. Lowering the bar only halfway will leave gains on the table, particularly for the pecs.
Now picture the typical barbell squat.Squatting to your heels ATG style is typically reserved for Olympic lifters or warm ups only, whether due to mobility restrictions or the movement being technically demanding. Reps with a partial range of motion have become normalised - lifters descending to parallel are generally doing pretty well.
Where the Pendulum Squat shines amongst leg machines is the natural feel you retain from squatting through an arc, and allowing a huge range of motion whilst retaining all the benefits of traditional machines like enhanced isolation, safety and an easy learning curve. A counterbalance shifts the strength curve so that the exercise is harder at the top where the quads are strongest, and lighter at the bottom, enabling more consistent tension. The foot plate can be adjusted through 24 unique positions to find your perfect position, enabling you to sink comfortably down for a loaded squat at full depth.
