Building a functional training space for Hyrox-style workouts

Whether you’re kitting out your garage or a commercial studio – the demand from hybrid athletes is the same. A space that can handle the training for Hyrox races and functional fitness competitions.
You’ve heard of the movements, you likely know the gaps in your current equipment. But pulling it all together into a space that supports the flow of group training, quick transitions and athlete potential – that's where the magic happens.
Start with the foundations
Build your training space from the ground up. Planning the layout of different flooring types means going from squat to sprint to sled is simple, safe and supports performance.
Put React Flooring Tiles in all areas of your space where you’ll do movements that demand durability, slip resistance and easy clean ups for sweat and chalk. Consider where you’ll perform movements like wall balls (against markers on the wall or targets attached to your uprights) and where you’ll position your ergs.

Thick Velocity Turf can be placed inside or out – where you’ll perform sled work, sprint practice and even those walking lunges. We recommend making your turfed space wide enough to allow minimum 2 sleds side by side, so group classes can keep flowing.
Line up the cardio
Whether those up in the strength training world like to admit it or not, races like Hyrox are primarily running events. And success is based on an athlete’s ability to maintain significant cardio output under fatigue. So, ensuring you have enough cardio pieces located as close to your weight training stations as possible is key.

We don’t need to tell you that Concept 2 are the best when it comes to ergs, that’s why we stock their Ski Erg, Row Erg, and Bike Erg. For smaller gyms, the wall mounted skis are great space savers. For studios where ergs need to be moved dependent on the programme of the day, the free-standing skis, rowers and bikes offer maximum flexibility of set-up.
If your space has easy access and safe local routes – map out those run distances and get your athletes outdoors. If not, the Iron Edge curved treadmill offers the closest movement mechanics you’ll find in a treadmill. Added bonus – it has a sled push resistance setting if you’re short on turf space.

Load up
Hybrid athletes are chasing speed, and strength. Having enough weighted equipment to push their limits means maximum performance on race day.
The sled is one of the most important strength training tools for hybrid athletes. The movement itself demands concentric only force, meaning less of the DOMS typically associated with eccentric movement. Stock up on bumper plates so there are plenty to load the Hurt Terminal Sled. Efficiency tip, the 7m Climbing Rope with Carabiner easily transforms it into a sled pull station.

When it comes to pro grade Kettlebells, Sandbags and Wall Balls - the more weight options, the more you can aid progressive overload in your athletes – and allow them to train past race-day kg’s.
The game changers
Sometimes, it’s the small things that take your training space to the next level.
Making sure timers are programmable for the training session and easily visible in your space keeps your athletes accountable to themselves, and the clock.
Fully stocking your chalk bowl with chalk. Having some pieces of recovery equipment in the gym like foam rollers and massage balls. The 1% extras that make a big difference.
